Druga Międzynarodowa Konferencja Grynbergowska

Henryk Grynberg has been, for over sixty years, writing as an outsider. In order to situate him in relation both to linguistic but also cultural and social milieus and countries where he has lived and worked, we turn to Mikhail Bakhtin's concept of 'vnenakhodimost' (the state of being situated outside the bounds of something or someone).

In Bakhtin's view an individual, a self, in order to be a dialogic force, has to preserve his or her role as the other. Bakhtin retains and develops the concept of an essential boundary between two consciousnesses in a dialogic context in his later work, remaining committed to the idea of 'vnenakhodimost' also in his approach to the study of culture. Grynberg both suffers from and takes advantage of his position outside the culture that surrounds him: in Poland he wrote in the language of the country but about the experience of the quintessential other, the Jew. Once in the United States, he was doubly marginalized: as someone who did not write in English and as an exile publishing in émigré presses (in London, Berlin, Paris). Finally, after 1989, he continued to write in Polish without returning there. His topos became, as one of his volumes of poetry proclaims, anti-nostalgia.

At the same time, it would be difficult to name another writer who belongs more to Polish literature, as he is in the tradition of Kochanowski, Gombrowicz and Miłosz. As Lidia Zessin-Jurek writes, Grynberg has three homelands: Poland, the lost homeland, Israel, the unacquired homeland, and the United States, the adoptive homeland. Indeed, the dominant image in Grynberg's oeuvre is that of perennial homelessness. At present the great writer lives and writes in an assisted living facility, facing the necessity of dismantling the house in which he had lived for thirty-five years in McLean, Va. Thus, he continues both as an outsider and a hermit, passionately engaged in the history, the contemporaneity and the future of all his homelands and at home only in his mother's tongue, the Polish.
